Magnetic fields in galaxies
Magnetic fields permeate the cosmos across different scales, from planets to the cosmic web. They are thought to be seeded by microscopic processes such as the Biermann battery, and are primarily amplified to observed microgauss strengths by dynamo processes. It is also believed that the galactic dynamo contributes to the observed star formation inefficiency in galaxies and the magnetization of the circumgalactic medium. However, the underlying mechanisms that drive the galactic dynamo remain poorly understood.
